BONE STORIES

March 2009: LaMotta Fine Art
11 Whitney Street, Hartford, Ct.

The gallery became a space as a diorama for this exhibition, creating a site-specific installation
comprised of figurative sculptures and papier mâché lanterns. Anne Cubberly’s imaginative sculptures and creations are fashioned from recycled materials that include wood scraps, wires, cables, bottles, and prosthesis parts. Paper mâché heads and masks personalize her figures, and her recent works incorporate kinetic elements comprised of simple mechanical components that make the works interactive.
Cubberly’s investment in using recycled materials as the fundamental element of her sculptures is as
much a statement of her interest in conservation as it is an expression of her philosophy surrounding the concept of community. Each sculpture is thereby imbued with a sense of history and personality relating to the origin of its collective parts.

Black vs White

Febuary 2007: 100 Pearl Street Gallery Hartford, CT. Curated by Janice La Motta of La Motta Fine Art.

Created by Anne Cubberly, this large scale interactive installation is a working chess set which can be played by the audience. The chess figures reflected the nature of their power and limitations. Cubberly was attempting to answer the questions...." if my family were a chess set what pieces would they be and what would the human characteristics of each piece be ?". A dramatic game of chess was played at the opening by local celebrities Luis Cotto, Brendan Mahoney and friends. Guerilla Art Critic Patricia Fontaine delighted as she listened in to two ten-year olds analyzing each move. Covering the walls were drawings by Cubberly of all 32 chess pieces which included a description of where their materials originated from.

This is a mixed media installation originally entitled White by Anne Cubberly. At the center is a 9 ft. tall skeletal figure wearing a boars 'head mask made from drift wood. The large figure is made from paper pulp (formally shredded office paper) over a wooden framework and is surrounded by other figures made from recycled materials including coaxial cable, wire, plastic bottles and scrap wood.
